24-hour petroleum operations to drive jobs, growth – NPA

The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) believes that adopting a 24-hour petroleum economy in Ghana’s downstream sector will generate numerous direct and indirect jobs. During a signing ceremony for a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the 24-Hour Economy Authority and the NPA, CEO Godwin Edudzi Tameklo emphasized the importance of this move toward around-the-clock operations.

He stressed the critical role of the downstream petroleum sector in Ghana’s economy, crucial for transportation, industry, and commerce.

Tameklo pointed out that current operational constraints have caused inefficiencies and lost opportunities, which this new initiative aims to resolve.

“The downstream petroleum sector is vital to our economy. It drives transportation, energizes industries, supports commerce, and underpins nearly every aspect of modern life.

However, for many years, this sector has operated mainly within limited hours, leading to supply chain inefficiencies and missed economic prospects,” he explained.

The NPA CEO added that implementing a 24-hour policy will maximize the industry’s potential.

“This vision involves maintaining continuous, 24/7 operations at key sites such as storage depots, refineries, and retail outlets to ensure petroleum products are available, accessible, and efficiently distributed at all times.

A 24-hour petroleum economy will enhance product availability nationwide, improve the efficiency and reliability of supply and distribution, create extensive employment opportunities, increase government revenue, and drive economic growth.

This initiative is about unlocking the full economic potential of the downstream petroleum value chain, not just extending operating hours,” Tameklo stated.

He also highlighted the importance of safety and security as operations expand, with support from national security agencies and emergency services to protect infrastructure and personnel.

Industry stakeholders, including oil marketing companies, distribution firms, depot operators, and transporters, will play a critical role in implementing the program through investments and operational preparedness.

The MoU marks the start of a collaborative effort between the NPA and the 24-Hour Economy Authority to transform Ghana’s downstream petroleum sector into a more efficient, resilient, and inclusive industry capable of operating around the clock.
