4 feared dead, others critically injured after a rock blast in Budumburam
Four persons are feared dead and several others critically injured after a rock blast as part of a construction project on the Budumburam stretch of the Accra Winneba highway.
The rock blast which lasted for a few minutes was done after several vehicles on the stretch were halted for the activity to take place.
This is not the first time rocks have been blasted on the Budumburam section of the highway according to residents of the area.
They said the blasting of the rock often destroys the roofing sheets of houses around the Big Apple area whenever it is done. The injured have been rushed to the St. Gregory Hospital in Budumburam.
Other residents questioned the competence of the contractor who caused the blast. He said, “If he cannot do the work, he should let us know. This place is a town, so why would he dig a steep hole in the town to kill people?”.
Another resident explained that they usually get informed when such activity is about to take place but, on this occasion, they were not informed.
“When it’s about an hour or two, we get informed, so we close our shops and leave. Sometimes when we leave, we decide whether to come back or not. When we wait after two hours, we reopen our shops but today, we were not informed.” – A shop owner in the area told the media.
An eyewitness narrated that “Someone came there to repair his TV, whilst waiting for his TV to get repaired, there was a blast and a huge stone hit his head.”
Another eyewitness said, “I was asleep when I heard loud noise, so I woke up and went out with a couple of friends, only to meet some Chinese guys in the pits.”
