Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin highlights role of parliaments in building inclusive and resilient societies

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has underscored the need to nurture hope, secure peace, and ensure justice as essential pillars for sustainable development.
Delivering Ghana’s statement at the 152nd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in Istanbul, he described hope as a reflection of confidence in systems that promote inclusive growth, protect livelihoods, and create opportunities, especially for young people.
He noted that lasting peace goes beyond the absence of conflict and must be grounded in justice, equity, and strong institutions.
Bagbin highlighted the crucial role of parliaments in advancing these ideals, referencing Ghana’s efforts in parliamentary oversight of environmental policies and social protection programmes.
Despite Ghana’s democratic stability, he acknowledged ongoing challenges including economic inequality, youth unemployment, weak institutional capacity, environmental degradation, and security threats, as well as emerging risks such as misinformation, cybersecurity concerns, and unequal access to digital technologies.
He emphasised that Parliament remains central to translating national aspirations into laws, policies, and accountability through its legislative, oversight, and representative functions.
The Speaker also pointed to interventions in education, youth empowerment, and social protection, alongside judicial reforms aimed at improving access to justice.
He concluded by calling for stronger collaboration and political will, stressing that building a peaceful, just, and hopeful society requires sustained and deliberate efforts.
