GNASSM Declares War on Illegal Mining on Water Bodies in Amansie South District
The Ghana National Association of Small Scale Miners (GNASSM) in the Amansie South district has launched a crusade against illegal mining on water bodies, destroying equipment used in such activities.
In a week-long operation, the GNASSM leadership and taskforce are targeting individuals mining on rivers Oda, Offin, and other water bodies in the district.
District Chairman of GNASSM, Mr. Kwaku Abonee, popularly known as Osama, expressed concern about the devastating effects of water pollution caused by illegal mining.
“The use of chemicals and heavy metals in illegal mining contaminates nearby water sources, harming aquatic life and human health,” This is what Mr. Kwaku Abonee had to say
He appealed to GNASSM leadership in other mining districts to emulate the exercise, supporting the government’s efforts to eradicate illegal mining.
“We urge our colleagues to join forces with the government to remove illegal miners, especially those operating on water bodies,” Mr. Aboneh stressed.
The operation is part of the government’s intensified efforts to combat illegal mining and protect water bodies and forest reserves.
GNASSM’s proactive stance demonstrates the association’s commitment to responsible mining practices and environmental sustainability.
The Amansie South district’s initiative sets a precedent for other districts to follow suit, bolstering the fight against illegal mining.
