Parts of Accra could be washed away if Weija Dam collapses- Engineers warn

Engineers at the Weija Dam have raised alarm over increasing encroachment around the dam and its treatment facility, warning that the situation could pose a serious danger to parts of the capital if not addressed.

According to Ing. Dr. Hadisu Alhassan, Production Manager for the ATMA Production Area at the Weija Water Treatment Plant operated by Ghana Water Limited, rapid development and human activities around the dam are threatening the safety and structural stability of the facility.

Dr. Alhassan warned that a collapse of the dam could have catastrophic consequences, noting that the large volume of water it holds could wash away significant portions of Accra.

The concerns were expressed during a working visit by the Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, who toured the facility to assess challenges facing the treatment plant and the dam.

During the tour, officials guided the minister and his team around the treatment plant and nearby areas, highlighting key issues such as encroachment, pressure on infrastructure, and operational difficulties affecting the facility.

Speaking to the media after the inspection, Mr. Adjei assured the management of Ghana Water Limited that the government is committed to addressing the situation. He added that he would engage the Minister for Local Government to help deal with the growing encroachment around the dam.

The minister also expressed satisfaction with ongoing repair works at the treatment plant, which are intended to improve water supply and help reduce shortages in parts of the capital.

The visit forms part of broader government efforts to safeguard the dam, protect nearby communities, and strengthen water supply systems for residents of Accra and surrounding areas.
