Two robbers killed in shoot-out with Police on Obuasi-Dunkwa highway

Ghana Police Service arrests six suspects and retrieves firearms and ammunition during intelligence-led operation in the Ashanti Region.

The Ghana Police Service has dismantled a suspected armed robbery gang believed to have been targeting motorists along the Obuasi–Dunkwa highway in the Ashanti Region.

The operation, carried out by the Ashanti South Regional Police Command on March 10 and 11, 2026, led to the arrest of six suspects. Police also recovered several firearms and ammunition, while investigators believe the arrests may expose a broader illegal arms supply network.

Addressing a press briefing on Thursday, March 12, the Ashanti South Regional Crime Officer, Stephen Antwi, said the operation followed credible intelligence that a group of armed individuals had assembled in a bush near the Obuasi–Dunkwa highway to stage robberies targeting motorists on the busy road.

He explained that at about 11:00 a.m. on March 10, a team of police officers was deployed to the area to intercept the suspects.

Upon reaching a section of the bush near Obuasi, officers reportedly sighted about four men believed to be armed. According to police, the suspects opened fire after spotting the security team and attempted to flee into the bush.

Officers returned fire, resulting in a brief exchange of gunshots. During the confrontation, two of the suspects sustained gunshot wounds while two others managed to escape into the bush, although they were believed to have been injured.

A subsequent search of the area led to the recovery of several weapons and ammunition suspected to have been intended for the planned robbery attack.

Items retrieved included an AK-47 assault rifle loaded with 28 rounds of 7.62×39mm ammunition and a pump-action gun loaded with five live BB cartridges. Police also recovered eight additional rounds of 7.62×39mm ammunition and one spent BB cartridge from the scene.
