Mahama’s LGBTQ+ comments disappointing – Ntim Fordjour

Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, a sponsor of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, 2025, criticized President John Dramani Mahama for remarks implying that the anti-LGBTQ+ legislation is not among Ghana’s top priorities.

During an engagement with civil society organizations at Jubilee House in Accra on Monday, March 30, President Mahama stated that while the bill is important, it isn’t one of the country’s most urgent issues.

“I explained during my recent engagement with the World Affairs Council that it is not the most important issue we face as a nation. We are still dealing with basic needs such as education, healthcare, jobs, food, clothing, and shelter,” President Mahama said.

On March 31, Rev. Ntim Fordjour told Citi News that the government’s stance has disappointed Ghanaians, arguing that the President’s comments minimized what many see as a significant issue.

“What he said… was even more dangerous, suggesting it is Parliament that is trying to pass their own bill,” he remarked, comparing the situation to former President Nana Akufo-Addo.

He said that similar statements from a previous government would have caused public outrage.

“If this statement from President Mahama today had come from President Akufo-Addo between 2021 and 2024, there would have been an uproar,” he stated.

Rev. Ntim Fordjour also questioned the silence of key social groups who had previously been outspoken on the matter.

“Where are the community organizations? Where are the faith-based groups? Where are the imams, pastors, traditional rulers, and CSOs that spoke so forcefully in 2024?” he asked.
