Australia’s fuel supply at risk following major fire at refinery

Blaze at Viva Energy Geelong Refinery disrupts supply as ongoing Iran conflict strains global energy markets

A major fire at one of Australia’s key oil refineries has disrupted fuel production, raising concerns about potential shortages as global supplies remain under pressure from the ongoing conflict involving Iran.

The blaze broke out late on April 15 at the Viva Energy Geelong Refinery in Geelong, one of only two operational refineries in the country. The fire, which reportedly started at the high-octane petrol unit, burned for several hours and forced a halt in production.

The facility is a critical part of Australia’s fuel network, supplying about 50 percent of fuel to Victoria and roughly 10 percent of the country’s total supply, intensifying fears of disruptions.

Despite the severity of the incident, all workers were accounted for and no injuries were reported.

Authorities initially described the fire as out of control, sparking concerns over reduced petrol output and possible shortages.

The incident comes at a time when global fuel supplies are already strained due to tensions in the Middle East, with experts warning of possible price increases and supply challenges if disruptions persist.

Analysts say the situation highlights Australia’s reliance on imported fuel and the vulnerability of its supply chain to both domestic incidents and international conflicts.
