Three Civilians Killed in Armed Attack on Military-Escorted Convoy in Upper East
Security forces repel ambush, kill seven attackers and arrest ten suspects amid rising tensions in Bawku area

Three civilians have been killed following an attack on a Ghana Armed Forces escort convoy in the Binduri area of the Upper East Region.
The convoy, which was transporting about 140 civilians from Bawku to Bolgatanga on Monday morning, April 27, 2026, reportedly came under heavy gunfire from unknown assailants.
In a statement issued later that night, the Ghana Armed Forces confirmed that the convoy was ambushed and fired upon multiple times, leading to the deaths of three civilians and leaving one other person injured.
Military personnel escorting the convoy returned fire and successfully repelled the attackers. In the process, seven of the assailants were killed.
During a follow-up operation, soldiers pursuing the fleeing attackers recovered a G3 automatic rifle, two fully loaded magazines containing 20 rounds each, and an additional 176 rounds of ammunition. The weapons were retrieved from a suspect who had attempted to hide in a mosque.
According to the statement, ten suspects have since been arrested and are currently assisting security agencies with investigations into the incident.
The attack has heightened concerns over security in the Upper East Region, particularly along the Bawku-Bolgatanga corridor, where tensions have remained high in recent times.
