Akufo-Addo cuts sod for Accra-Tema Motorway expansion project

The Accra-Tema motorway, a crucial link between Tema’s industrial area and Accra’s metropolitan centre, is poised for a significant upgrade after nearly six decades of service.

During a sod-cutting ceremony in Accra on Monday, August 26, President Akufo-Addo announced plans to transform the motorway into a modern 10-lane highway.

This expansion aims to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance safety, making the motorway fully accessible and more efficient.

The 27.7-kilometer project will be executed in three phases. The first phase involves the rehabilitation of the motorway itself, the second focuses on upgrading the George Walker Bush Highway, and the third addresses improvements to the Nsawam Road.
Additionally, the upgrade will include the reconstruction of critical interchanges, the installation of toll plazas, footbridges, and other key infrastructure developments.

President Akufo-Addo highlighted that this ambitious project, undertaken through a public-private partnership with a wholly Ghanaian-owned company, reflects the growing capacity of local enterprises.
He emphasised that the motorway’s expansion is a progressive step toward achieving a modern, prosperous, and well-connected Ghana.

The President called on all stakeholders to ensure the project is completed on schedule and within budget, reinforcing his administration’s dedication to infrastructure development and national progress
