Anti-LGBTQ bill not priority, will be handled democratically- Prez. Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has urged calm and dialogue regarding LGBTQ+ issues, highlighting that it’s a highly sensitive and emotional topic, even in liberal democracies.

On March 30, during a discussion with civil society groups at Jubilee House in Accra, he stated that although important, this matter is not the nation’s most urgent challenge. “I explained during my recent engagement with the World Affairs Council that it is not the most critical issue we face as a country. We are still addressing basic needs such as education, healthcare, jobs, food, clothing, and shelter,” he said.

The private member’s bill in Parliament has ignited a nationwide debate, reflecting diverse viewpoints. Mahama emphasized Ghana’s decisions will be guided by the Constitution, human rights, and social cohesion. “While opinions differ widely, we must address issues democratically, respecting our core values, dialogue, and the rule of law,” he stated.

He also noted international reactions, including Lincoln University withdrawing honorary doctorates, and stressed the importance of constructive dialogue and mutual respect.

“These events highlight the need for ongoing engagement and respecting each other while grounding our national decisions in our constitutional and cultural context. Ghana remains committed to democratic principles and constructive international relations,” Mahama concluded.
