“Dengue Fever vs Malaria: Understanding the Differences in Symptoms and Treatment”

“Dr. Richard Eghan Discusses Dengue Fever Preparedness on ‘ADEKYE3 MU NSEM’”

Dr. Richard Eghan, a Global Health Scientist from the United Kingdom, joined Ama Papabi on the show “ADEKYE3 MU NSEM” to discuss the recent outbreak of Dengue fever and the readiness of Ghana’s health sector to handle it. Dr. Eghan explained that Dengue fever is primarily transmitted by the Aedes mosquito and often occurs in tropical countries like Ghana.

This mosquito-borne disease thrives in areas with poor sanitation and stagnant water, which are ideal breeding grounds for the mosquitoes. Climate change has also been a significant factor in the increased incidence of Dengue fever.

The symptoms of Dengue fever are similar to those of malaria, including headaches, body pain, and general weakness, which often leads to misdiagnosis and improper treatment. While Dengue fever can present mild symptoms in approximately 75% of those infected, 25% of cases can result in severe symptoms such as internal bleeding, severe diarrhea, and shock.

This highlights the importance of accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment, which are often lacking due to the rarity of the disease.
