From Player to Founder : Ghana’s Youngest Club CEO, Gladys Amponsah Shares Her Story
Gladys Amposah, a passionate female football enthusiast from Moseaso in the Ashanti region , has transformed her love for the sport into a thriving community initiative. Despite limited opportunities to advance her own football career, Gladys, a student at Aburi Women’s Teacher Training College and an alumni of Jumor Presbyterian Senior High School, never gave up on her dream.
Supported by her parents, Esther Asantewaa and Francis Okyere, who provided her with the necessary football gear, Gladys is still an active
footballer, plays as a midfielder, donning the number 8 jersey, she expressed interest in playing professionally when the opportunity avails itself when she was quizzed by the host Alex Ofosu Aggrey.
Understanding the importance of staying connected to the game, she founded the Junior Armour Football Club, initially as a casual endeavor with local children, which has now blossomed into a vibrant team.
The Junior Armour Football Club, consisting of boys and girls aged 9 to 15 from Moseaso and neighboring communities, is a testament to Gladys’s dedication. The team started as a playful activity for kids but quickly gained momentum due to her commitment and the community’s support. Parents in the area, recognizing the value and struggle, often assist with transportation and jerseys for the children.
The club’s success is also attributed to the efforts of two dedicated coaches who work tirelessly to develop the young players’ skills and contribute funds for necessary equipment. The respect and recognition Gladys has garnered as the founder of the team bring her immense joy and fulfillment.
Gladys’s vision extends beyond her immediate achievements. She calls upon the government, her district MP, and potential sponsors to support her initiative, with the hope of nurturing future stars for Ghana’s national team, the Black Stars. With the right backing, Gladys believes the Junior Armour Football Club can produce exceptional talents, furthering the country’s proud football legacy and inspiring more young people to pursue their passions against all odds.
