Ghana Should Have The Debate On Joining BRICS As A Nation For Its Many Benefits

In a visionary move by Ingenious Limited, a Ghanaian owned business owned by Mr. Samuel Teme-Mensah Nortey in Partnership with the Director of International Relations, of International Alliance for BRICS strategic Projects, West and Central Africa, Prof. Williams Ijoma and BRICS, this Press Conference was held to throw more light on the need for Ghana to BRICS.

In a detailed but short presser he read “The Director of International Relations, of International Alliance for BRICS strategic Projects, West and Central Africa, Prof. Williams Ijoma, Ladies and gentlemen of the press, esteemed guests, and fellow Ghanaians,
I stand before you today to discuss a pivotal moment in our nation’s history. As we gather here, I want to talk about the immense possibilities that await us as we consider joining the BRICS alliance. The theme of our discussion today, “BRICS and African collaborations: The challenges and prospects,” underscores the significance of this moment.
As we all know, BRICS has emerged as a significant player in global governance, and its expanding membership is a testament to its growing influence. The addition of Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates in 2024 and the inclusion of African Giants, Nigeria in 2025 has not only increased Africa’s weight in international affairs but has also contributed to the ongoing discussion of the complexities of multipolarity ¹.
So, why should Ghana join BRICS? The answer lies in the numerous benefits that come with membership. By joining BRICS, Ghana can:
– Diversify its economy: BRICS offers a platform for Ghana to diversify its economy, reduce dependence on traditional Western markets, and tap into new markets and investment opportunities.
– Enhance its global influence: As a member of BRICS, Ghana can amplify its voice on the global stage, shape international policies, and promote African interests.
– Access new technologies and infrastructure: BRICS has established institutions like the New Development Bank (NDB) and the Contingent Reserve Arrangement (CRA), which provide access to new technologies, infrastructure financing, and capacity-building programs.
– Foster regional integration: BRICS membership can facilitate Ghana’s integration into regional and global value chains, promoting economic growth, job creation, and poverty reduction.
However, we are also aware of the challenges that come with BRICS membership. These include:
– Competition and cooperation: Ghana will need to navigate the complexities of cooperation and competition within the BRICS framework, balancing its national interests with the need for collective action.
– Institutional capacity: Ghana will need to strengthen its institutional capacity to effectively participate in BRICS decision-making processes and benefit from its programs and initiatives.
– Diversifying economic partnerships: Ghana will need to diversify its economic partnerships to reduce dependence on any single market or partner, ensuring that its economic relationships are balanced and mutually beneficial.
In conclusion, joining BRICS presents Ghana with a unique opportunity to enhance its economic growth, global influence, and regional integration. While there are challenges to be addressed, I firmly believe that the benefits of membership far outweigh the costs.
I urge the government and people of Ghana to seize this moment, to engage in a national conversation about the prospects and challenges of BRICS membership, and to work together to ensure that Ghana takes its rightful place among the BRICS nations.
Thank you.”
