It has become very capital intensive to get into poultry farming in Ghana- Owura George

On Wednesday 3rd of July at Kasoa Anomobi Owura George, a poultry farmer shared his experience on Lucky TV’s Yediemu.

When quizzed by the host Adjoa Acheampomaa Owoahene to educate her viewers in the subject matter, he said “The first stage should be to build a coop for the birds, like mine is built with plywoods, zinc wire and wire mesh ,a polyrubber and Lay one and half or two feet block to prevent rain from entering the building.

We import the Chickens here and before they come we set a pot of fire or use the light heater to keep them warm and safe .

It takes one a half month before you can stop keeping them warm and as they are growing they eat a lot, we have food for every stage they get.

There are different types of fowls for poultry farming, namely layers and broilers, in simple terms, the layers lay eggs while the broilers are reared for their meat.

In elaborating on the kinds of feeds they feed them with, he said “they include the magic starter for the chicks ,chickens stater grower and layer smashed, talking about the types of medicines and the medicine used to protect them and it very important to vaccinate them and how they are being fed we have an automated machine used in feeding them water and a bowl for their feed .

As the caretaker you must take precautions before you step into the chicken coop, such as protect ourselves from getting infections for instance when entering the Farm we change our clothes and wash our hands and legs after coming out.
It takes 20 weeks for chickens to lay eggs and for you to know that this chicken is ready to lay eggs there are signs of how to know.

It is important to note that, as a poultry farmer seeking to make economic gain out of your trade, seeking knowledge the right way in how to properly manage the birds is very important.

On the issue of chicken feed he stressed on the reality of what poultry farmers are facing in the economy saying “the feeds are very expensive so if you want to start a chicken business you have to be financially stable “ and you have to always feed the birds with feed prices costing nothing less than and 350 cedis.

He ended by pleading with the government to help reduce the price of the medicine and feed to help expand and help solve the constant cancer of importing chicken.
