KMA LAUNCHES ROAD SAFETY SURVEILLANCE REPORT 2024
The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), in collaboration with Bloomberg Philanthropist Initiative of Global Road Safety (BIGRS) and Vital Strategies, has launched the Kumasi Road Safety Surveillance Report 2024.
This will provide information on accident and accident related cases to enable stakeholders track trends and use the findings to locate “at-risk road user groups, risk periods and high-risk crash locations” to guide the implementation of interventions to help curb road accidents.
Speaking in an interview, Mr. Isaac Oduro representative from the Ashanti Regional National Road safety on the occasion said “Almost 90 per cent of road fatalities in the observation period were pedestrians, motorcycle riders and cyclists – the most vulnerable road users.
He also disclosed that other key findings of the report indicated that the highest number of crashes during the period was recorded in the night during cloudy weather.
Mr. Isaac Oduro added that, National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has initiated a comprehensive registration process for road transport service providers, marking a significant step in its commitment to overseeing and regulating the road transport sector.
He said this involved in-road transport services, including transport companies, unions, state agency transport departments, school bus services, tyre service centers, and garages, are obligated to register with the Authority to comply with legal requirements.
Failure to register according to the Authority may result in sanctions imposed by the NRSA, as mandated by law.
On his part, Nana Yaw Akuoko is the Otumfour Assinhene also used the opportunity to appeal to Ghanaians that, road safety is a shared responsibility to all of us therefore we should be more conscious about road safety.
He said, the rate at which road accidents is claiming lives in the country is quiet alarming.
