NDC’s Chief Biney and NPP’s Afia Akoto end their marriage

Former Deputy National Organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Chief Nixon Hamilton Biney, popularly known as Chief Biney, has shared a video that appears to signify the official end of his marriage to Afia Akoto, a former Deputy CEO of the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) under the Akufo-Addo led government.

In the video posted on Facebook on February 13, 2025, Chief Biney is seen with an alcoholic drink (Schnapp), believed to have been given to him by a relative of Afia Akoto. This act is traditionally recognized as a formal way of dissolving a marriage in certain Ghanaian customs.
Chief Biney and Afia Akoto made headlines in 2020 when they tied the knot in a high-profile wedding attended by top political figures from both the NDC and the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Their union was celebrated as a rare example of political differences being set aside for love. However, in recent years, signs of trouble surfaced, with Afia Akoto previously hinting at the marriage’s end.

In his post, Chief Biney did not provide specific details about the separation but expressed gratitude to God for the conclusion of the marriage. He captioned the video with a biblical reference, emphasizing faith in divine guidance.
