Political Interests Threaten OSP’s Work – Agyebeng

Special Prosecutor pushes for reforms to ensure long-term independence

Kissi Agyebeng has raised concerns about political interference in the work of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), describing the institution as a frequent target for politicians seeking to weaken its operations.

Speaking at the National Dialogue on the Focus of the Special Prosecutor on Tuesday, March 31, he noted that the OSP’s continued existence has largely depended on the backing of John Dramani Mahama. This comes amid reports that the Majority in Parliament is considering a bill to scrap the office.

Mr. Agyebeng cautioned that many politicians view the OSP as a threat to their interests, making it vulnerable to attempts aimed at limiting its powers. He emphasized that this underscores the need for stronger support from civil society and the general public.

He further called for constitutional protections to guarantee the independence and permanence of the office, stressing that its survival should not rely on the support of any particular administration.

According to him, the institution must be strengthened to ensure that future Special Prosecutors can focus on their mandate rather than defending the office’s existence
