Real Madrid have beaten Athletico Madrid on penalties to reach the Champions League quarter-final.

Atletico overturned the first-leg deficit thanks to a goal after just 27 seconds from Conor Gallagher, and they had Vinicius Junior to thank for the game reaching extra time as he blazed a 70th-minute penalty a long way over the crossbar.

He did not get the chance to make amends in the shootout, but his team-mates spared his blushes, winning 4-2 on penalties. The shootout was not without drama, with Julian Alvarez’s converted spot kick disallowed by VAR as he touched the ball twice after slipping.

Antonio Rudiger was the man who scored the winning penalty after Marcos Llorente hammered his effort onto the crossbar.

Real Madrid will face Arsenal in the quarter-final.
