Resident of Akyemansa sounds alarm over galamsey pollution of Pra River

A resident of the Akyemansa District in the Ofoase Ayirebi constituency has raised concerns about the escalating activities of illegal miners in nearby communities.
During an interview on Ekosii Sen with host Philip Osei Bonsu, the resident, identified as Kweku, urged the government to act swiftly to curb the growing galamsey problem in the district.
He stated that residents frequently report illegal mining sites to the Blue Water Guards. However, he claimed that when officials attempt to shut down the operations, the miners allegedly assert they are acting under the directives of the District Chief Executive.
Kweku also voiced concern about the condition of the Pra River, a key source of drinking water for many communities. He pointed out that the river has become significantly polluted due to illegal mining activities, especially from the use of harmful chemicals like mercury.
He warned that the pollution threatens the health and livelihoods of residents who depend on the river for their daily needs.
Kweku consequently called on the government and relevant authorities to take immediate steps to address this issue and safeguard the environment and water resources in the district.
