Ghana to declare first marine protected area at Cape Three Points

The Vice President, Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, will announce Ghana’s first Marine Protected Area (MPA) at Greater Cape Three Points on Tuesday, April 14.

In a press briefing from the Vice Presidency, officials stated that the initiative aims to restore fish stocks, protect marine biodiversity, and strengthen Ghana’s blue economy. The project is expected to aid in the recovery of declining fisheries, safeguard marine ecosystems, and improve livelihoods in coastal communities by ensuring long-term fish supply and food security.

The MPA was approved by Cabinet in October 2025, marking a major policy shift towards sustainable ocean management in Ghana. Located along the coastline of the Western Region between Ampatano and Domunli, the protected area spans approximately 700 square kilometers of vital marine and coastal ecosystems. It serves as a breeding and nursery ground for species like sardinella, anchovies, and mackerel, and provides migratory routes for whales and dolphins, as well as nesting sites for endangered sea turtles.
