The Forgotten Coast: Ekon’s Struggle For Survival

Nana Kwame Edu Ababio, Odikro of Ekon in the Cape Coast South Constituency, has expressed deep frustration and disappointment over the lack of support for his community. During the ‘Ekon Apayem Festival 2024’, held under the theme “Development of Ekon, The Time is Now”, Nana Edu lamented that Ekon’s absence of vital social amenities and ongoing crises have led to feelings of rejection, as if the community is not considered Ghanaians.

At the heart of Ekon’s struggles lies the destructive sea breeze, exacerbated by the absence of sea defense and breakwater structures. Unlike neighboring coastal areas, such as Cape Coast and Moree, Ekon remains vulnerable to the relentless forces of nature. The consequences are dire: properties are destroyed, livelihoods are unpredictable, and divorce, death, and calamity have become all too common.

Nana Edu emphasized that these critical infrastructure projects are essential for Ekon’s survival and growth.

The Odikro has prioritized education, establishing an education fund to support local children and a proposed of Ekon Chief Palace was also launched during the durbar.

Nana Edu urged politicians, NGOs, MMDCEs, and government officials to provide tangible assistance.

The ‘Ekon Apayem Festival 2024’ brought together prominent figures and chiefs, serving as a platform for the community to voice its concerns and plea for help. As Ekon struggles to overcome its challenges, the need for collective action and support becomes increasingly urgent.
