Trump Warns of Strained Ties with Allies Over Iran Conflict
Donald Trump criticises Giorgia Meloni and questions NATO unity as tensions rise in the Strait of Hormuz.

U.S. President Donald Trump has warned that countries which declined to support the United States in the ongoing Iran conflict and tensions in the Strait of Hormuz could face strained diplomatic ties with Washington.
Speaking on April 15, 2026, President Trump stated that the U.S. would not maintain “the same relationship” with nations that refused to assist during what he described as a critical moment involving Iran.
The president singled out Italian Prime Minister c, criticising her government’s decision not to participate in the conflict. He described the stance as a “lack of courage” and characterised it as “negative,” suggesting it alters the nature of the longstanding alliance between the two countries.
“We do not have the same relationship with anyone who refused us help in this Iranian situation,” Trump said, underscoring a tougher position on international cooperation.
The remarks also cast uncertainty over the role of NATO, with the U.S. leader questioning the value of the alliance if member states do not align with Washington on key security issues.
Italy has maintained that it has no intention of engaging in military action against Iran, with Prime Minister Meloni previously affirming her government’s non-participation in the conflict.
The developments come amid heightened tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route, where Iran has been accused of mining the waterway raising fears of wider instability in the region.
Analysts say the latest comments signal a potential shift in U.S. foreign policy, where future security and diplomatic relations may increasingly depend on allies’ willingness to support American-led military actions.
