Lack of Clean Water; Residents in Assin Cry for Portable Water
The dry season, which lasts from October to March is characterized by high temperatures, low humidity, which causes watering holes and rivers to dry up. Though people can survive a few months without food, they can only survive for a day or two without water.
Residents in Assin Tsehentse a farming community in the Assin South District of the Central Region are crying for portable water since the only source of water in the community is in a deplorable state.
Residents in the area told Lucky TV News Odehyeɛba Gilbert that, they have since been compelled to depend on polluted water fetched from River afia kwakyewah for domestic use.
According to them, a mechanized borehole was provided to the community some time ago, but it is not working so the few who could afford purchased sachet water for their drinking needs while the majority relied on the River and appealed to the assembly to come to their aid.
Children as young as 10 years were seen staggering deep into the less disturbed portion of the river to fetch water at the peril of their lives.
Some residents Odehyeɛba Gilbert spoke to disclose that their children fell ill often with diarrhea and usually experienced itchy skin after bathing with the water but they had no choice but to use it since it was the only source of water.
The Assembly member of the area, Hon. Joshua Often Agyapong, confirmed the difficulties faced by the community and added that his outfit has written and submitted proposals to government agencies, NGOs, and cooperate organizations to come to their aid but all have proved futile.
He said residents risk contracting waterborne diseases, “if care is not taken waterborne disease can strike this community. The water is not hygienic”.
School children don’t bath before going to school and teachers also find it difficult to cope with the situation.
He however called on the government and other entities to come to their aid to help provide them with portable water.
