The NLC attacks teacher unions for their “unmeritorious” strike.

The Executive Secretary of the National Labour Commission (NLC), Ofosu Asamoah, criticized the ongoing strike by labor unions in the educational sector. He deemed their actions as unjustified and unnecessary, considering that negotiations with the Commission were still underway.

Mr. Asamoah expressed concern that strikes were being misused as a tool by labor unions and characterized their actions as incorrect and unlawful. On the other hand, the labor unions, including the Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana, Federation of Universities Senior Staff (FUSSAG), Teachers and Educational Workers Union of Ghana (TEWU), and the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA), are currently on strike due to the government’s failure to address crucial concerns affecting their members.

These concerns include the neglect of welfare needs such as Tier-2 pension funds, vehicle maintenance allowance, and overtime allowance.

Despite this, the NLC is urging the unions to halt their strike actions and resume negotiations. It’s a complex situation that requires open dialogue and a willingness to find a resolution that satisfies both parties.
