Manchester United are the frontrunners to secure the Europa League title – Ivan Rakitic

Former Barcelona and Sevilla midfielder Ivan Rakitic has backed Manchester United to beat Spurs in Wednesday’s Europa League final.

Rakitic, who won the Europa League trophy with Sevilla on two occasions reckons the Red Devils’ catastrophic season will spur them to the title.

The 37-year-old made this revelation to 3Sports via La Liga media.

“It’s like the Champions League final. It’s two teams that know each other well. In theory, they have a season to forget and its the last chance for both teams [to win something].

“For me i think Manchester United are slighty favourites and this would help with everything that is happening around the club,” he said.

Despite tipping United for victory, Rakitic acknowledged the monumental task for Spurs, who have already beaten United on three occasions this term.

“It’s also a very important game for Spurs. I think its going to be very physical, very strong because a lot at stake for both teams. It’s going to be interesting.”

United have already enjoyed success at the San Mames, the venue for the final, beating Athletic Club 3-0 in the semi final first leg.

The victory moved United a step closer to securing a first European crown in eight years while Spurs are determined to break a 17-year trophy voodoo.

“They are lucky to play in one of the best stadiums in Europe. I’m a great fan of San Mames, it’s going to be very interesting.”

“The teams wouldn’t want to make mistakes because they know a lot of the season depends on this match.”

The game will take place at on Wednesday night, with the winner set to secure an automatic Champions League spot – a huge opportunity for both clubs who find themselves in the bottom half of the Premier League.
