Carlos Queiroz Yet to Sign Full Black Stars Contract – Sports Minister

Government says salary negotiations ongoing as coach begins World Cup preparations

The Minister for Sports and Recreation has revealed that newly appointed Black Stars head coach, Carlos Queiroz, is yet to sign his full contract despite being officially unveiled.

The 73-year-old Portuguese coach, who replaces Otto Addo, has been given a short-term deal expected to cover Ghana’s participation in the upcoming FIFA World Cup in North America.

Following his unveiling, Queiroz has begun early preparations for the tournament, embarking on a European tour to meet and engage Ghanaian players ahead of the competition.

Speaking on Asempa FM, the Minister clarified that discussions regarding the coach’s salary are still ongoing, dismissing reports suggesting he would earn $100,000 per month.

“I will check the figures [of his salary] because we have not finalised and signed the full contract and everything, so I cannot give the exact figure, but it’s not up to $100,000,” he said.

He added that the agreement with Queiroz is strictly short-term and focused on the World Cup campaign.

“The condition we agreed was that we were going for a short-term contract, maximum four months, for the period of the World Cup, but the performance would determine any further agreement,” Mr. Adams explained.

Queiroz is expected to name his World Cup squad in the coming weeks, with Ghana scheduled to play high-profile friendly matches against Mexico and Wales as part of their final preparations. The team will conclude its pre-tournament build-up with a game against Wales on June 2.

Ghana, preparing for their fifth FIFA World Cup appearance, have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama. The Black Stars will begin their campaign against Panama on June 17, face England on June 23, and play their final group match against Croatia on June 27.

After disappointing early exits in 2014 and 2022, hopes are high for an improved performance under the leadership of the experienced Queiroz.
