Energy Ministry Rejects Calls for Jinapor’s Resignation Over Power Outages

Spokesperson defends minister, cites progress in stabilising sector and clearing debts

The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has dismissed calls for the resignation of its sector minister, Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, describing the demands as politically driven and not reflective of the sector’s current performance.

The Minority in Parliament had earlier called for the Minister to step down on Tuesday, April 28, citing ongoing challenges in the energy sector, particularly intermittent power outages affecting parts of the country. They argued that the situation points to leadership failures that justify his removal.

In response, the Ministry maintained that such claims overlook the progress made in stabilising the sector and addressing longstanding challenges inherited from the previous administration.

Speaking on Citi FM, the Ministry’s spokesperson, Richmond Rockson, defended the Minister’s record, pointing to what he described as tangible improvements under his leadership.

He noted that government efforts have focused on increasing generation capacity, maintaining relative stability in electricity supply, and addressing financial constraints within the sector.

“For somebody who has kept the lights on 12 months of no-load shedding, is he somebody you describe as a failure?” he questioned.

Mr. Rockson also highlighted measures taken to service debts in the energy sector, which he said have helped rebuild trust among utility providers and attract new investments.

“For somebody who has kept paying debt, who has kept faith with utility companies and then, due to that, they are bringing more projects, is that the person you describe as such?” he added.

He further encouraged the public to rely on official data and industry feedback rather than political commentary.

“Read the press release by the utility company. After the government paid $1.47 billion, please read the press release. And then listen to what the industry is saying, and not what the so-called politicians are saying, but what the industry is saying about Dr. Jinapor.”
