Fourth Akosombo Unit Restored as Power Recovery Gains Momentum

Government says progress accelerating as efforts continue to stabilise electricity supply after substation fire

The government has announced that the fourth power generation unit at the Akosombo Dam has been successfully restored, marking further progress in efforts to stabilise Ghana’s power supply following recent disruptions.

The update was shared by the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, in a Facebook post on April 28.

The latest development comes just hours after the third unit was brought back into operation, highlighting the pace of recovery work aimed at restoring lost generation capacity after the fire incident at the Akosombo substation.

“At 9:09pm, the fourth unit at Akosombo Dam was successfully brought into operation, an encouraging step that strengthens power generation and reflects the dedication and expertise of the team behind the effort,” Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor wrote.

The fire incident, which affected the control room, led to the loss of more than 1,000 megawatts from the national grid, resulting in supply instability and intermittent outages across the country.

With the phased restoration of the units, authorities expect a steady improvement in power generation and system reliability, as engineers continue efforts to fully restore operations at the facility.

Technical teams have been working around the clock under challenging conditions to repair damaged infrastructure and bring additional units back online.

The government has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring a stable and resilient power supply, while supporting the engineers and technicians leading the recovery process.

The latest milestone signals gradual relief in power supply constraints, as officials maintain that all necessary steps are being taken to restore consistent electricity to homes and businesses nationwide.
