Ghana Gas Plant Fault Triggers Power Supply Disruptions

Failure at Ghana National Gas Company facility cuts gas to power plants as engineers race to restore operations

The Ghana Gas Processing Plant experienced a major technical issue due to the total failure of the Burner Management System controller for the Heat Medium System. This caused an emergency shutdown and reduced gas supplies to thermal power plants.

In a joint statement on April 15, 2026, Ghana Gas and the Ghana Grid Company announced that the damaged system needs complete replacement.

“The public is hereby informed that the Ghana Gas Processing Plant has experienced a significant technical fault following the complete failure of the Burner Management System controller for the Heat Medium System. Preliminary assessments indicate that the affected system is damaged and will require a full replacement,” the statement read.

This unexpected problem led to an emergency shutdown of the plant and a temporary cut in gas supply to some power plants. As a result, power outages have been reported in parts of the country.

A thorough technical and safety risk assessment is ongoing to find the safest and quickest way to restore operations.

“A dedicated team of engineers is working diligently, around the clock, to replace the damaged system and expedite the restoration process,” the release stated.

Depending on the assessment outcomes, Ghana Gas plans to begin restoring operations today, April 16, 2026.

The public is asked to stay patient during this period.

“We will keep the public updated as the situation develops. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and thank everyone for their understanding and cooperation,” the statement concluded.
