Mahama Assures Improved Power Supply, Clarifies Use of Health Tricycles
John Dramani Mahama links outages to upgrades, says new equipment will stabilise electricity and boost healthcare delivery

President John Dramani Mahama has expressed optimism about improved electricity supply across Ghana, citing ongoing infrastructure upgrades aimed at stabilising the national grid.
During a visit to the Northern Electricity Distribution Company on April 19, 2026, as part of his “Resetting Ghana” tour, the President inspected transformers being deployed under a nationwide upgrade programme.
He revealed that about 2,500 transformers have been procured and are currently being installed in the first phase, targeting the replacement of old and faulty equipment to improve the reliability and quality of power supply.
Addressing concerns over recent outages, Mahama explained that the interruptions are due to ongoing technical works and do not signal a return to prolonged power challenges, but rather efforts to build a more resilient energy system.
Meanwhile, speaking at Bimbilla during a sod-cutting ceremony for a 24-hour economy model market, the President also clarified the purpose of tricycles distributed under the Free Primary Health Care programme.
He explained that the tricycles are not ambulances but are designed to support health workers and volunteers in delivering essential services at the community level.
According to him, the vehicles are equipped to transport vaccines while maintaining the cold chain and will be used for immunisation campaigns, routine health screenings, and early detection of conditions such as hypertension and diabetes.
The initiative is expected to improve access to healthcare, particularly in remote and underserved communities.
