Government to Launch WhatsApp System for Reporting Power Outages

John Abdulai Jinapor says new platform will enable real-time fault reporting and faster response

Government is set to digitise how Ghanaians report power outages with plans to introduce a WhatsApp-based system that allows users to instantly flag faults and receive rapid technical support.

The initiative, announced by the Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, aims to eliminate delays associated with traditional call centres and improve communication between power providers and consumers.

Speaking at the final day of the President’s resetting tour of the Northern Region, Dr. Jinapor said the move forms part of broader efforts to enhance efficiency across the electricity, renewable energy, and petroleum sectors.

According to him, the new system will allow consumers to report outages without making calls, simply by sending a WhatsApp message with their location.

He noted that technical teams will then be dispatched in real time to address reported faults, significantly reducing downtime and improving service delivery.

The rollout is expected to strengthen digital engagement in the power sector, as government leverages mobile technology to improve fault reporting and response times.
