Fake Taxi Driver Jailed 23 Years for Serial Sexual Attacks in Liverpool

Predatory offender posed as cab driver to target vulnerable women on nights out

A 29-year-old man who posed as a taxi driver to prey on vulnerable women in Liverpool has been jailed for 23 years following a series of sexual offences.

Amponsah Thompson was sentenced at Liverpool Crown Court after being found guilty of multiple offences, including rape and sexual assault, committed between August 2024 and 2025.

The court heard that Thompson used his white Mercedes to prowl nightlife areas, targeting lone and intoxicated women before luring them into his car by falsely claiming to be a taxi driver.

In the first incident in August 2024, an 18-year-old woman, separated from her friends after a night out, approached Thompson believing he was a legitimate driver. Instead of taking her home, he drove her to his residence, where he sexually assaulted her. She managed to escape after pretending her family was tracking her location.

Despite being arrested and released on bail, Thompson reoffended in December 2024. He picked up another 18-year-old woman in an intoxicated state and later raped her at his flat. A jury subsequently convicted him of the offence.

The court also heard that throughout 2025, Thompson repeatedly abused a third victim, raping her multiple times, physically assaulting her, and threatening her with a knife.

Prosecutor David Polglase described the offender as “manipulative” and a “sexual predator” with no regard for consent.

Although the defence, led by Anthony O’Donohoe, argued that Thompson had no prior convictions, the presiding judge, Brian Cummings, ruled that he posed a significant ongoing risk to the public.

Sentencing him as a dangerous offender, the judge handed down a 23-year prison term with an additional eight years on licence. Thompson will be required to serve at least two-thirds of his sentence before being eligible for parole and will remain on the sex offenders’ register for life.

The court noted that deportation would be considered separately by the relevant authorities.
