GCMC Raises Alarm as 30% of LPG Cylinders Fail Safety Checks

Ghana Cylinder Manufacturing Company urges nationwide rollout of safety model to curb risks

The Ghana Cylinder Manufacturing Company (GCMC) has raised concerns over household safety, revealing that nearly 30 per cent of gas cylinders submitted for refurbishment under the Cylinder Recirculation Model (CRM) are unfit for continued use.

According to the company, the high rate of defective cylinders highlights growing safety risks, including gas leaks, fires, and explosions, which have previously led to devastating incidents in communities.

Speaking to journalists, Managing Director Abdul-Rahman Mankir stressed the need to expand the implementation of the CRM beyond its current operational areas to enhance public safety nationwide.

He noted that the model is currently operational in Accra, Kumasi, and Tema, adding that a nationwide rollout, coupled with intensified public education, would significantly improve compliance and reduce risks.

Mr Mankir also observed that awareness of the initiative remains low in some areas, including parts of Accra, and called for stronger collaboration with the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) to boost public participation.

The Cylinder Recirculation Model, championed by the NPA, is designed to ensure that Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders are regularly inspected, maintained, and replaced when necessary.

Under the system, consumers exchange empty cylinders for certified, pre-filled ones at designated outlets instead of refilling their own cylinders at fuel stations.

GCMC says expanding the programme is critical to reducing the circulation of unsafe cylinders and protecting lives and property across the country.
