GES Closes Teacher Recruitment Portal After Surge in Applications

Over 40,000 applicants compete for 7,000 slots as government cites budget constraints

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has shut down its teacher recruitment application portal just days after opening it on April 10, 2026, due to an overwhelming number of submissions.

According to the Service, more than 40,000 prospective teachers applied for only 7,000 available positions, forcing authorities to close the portal earlier than scheduled to manage the high volume of applications.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra, the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, explained that the limited number of vacancies was due to budgetary constraints, despite the strong demand for teaching jobs nationwide.

He indicated that the government would have preferred to recruit up to 50,000 teachers if resources permitted, but current financial limitations made that impossible.

Mr. Iddrisu also emphasised that the recruitment process was conducted transparently, with official clearance granted to hire a specific number of qualified candidates.

He noted that the high number of applications highlights the increasing demand for employment within the education sector.

Following the closure of the portal, he assured applicants that those who successfully submitted their applications would undergo a thorough and merit-based assessment, focusing on their qualifications, competence, and readiness for the role.
