MTN Ghana CEO Denies Data Theft Allegations
Stephen Blewett says rising data usage, not fraud, behind disappearing bundles

The Chief Executive Officer of MTN Ghana, Stephen Blewett, has dismissed claims that the company is involved in the theft of customers’ data amid growing public concern over disappearing data bundles.
His response follows increasing complaints from subscribers about the rapid depletion and, in some cases, unexplained loss of their data.
Addressing the issue on April 17, Blewett insisted that MTN has no incentive to engage in such practices, stressing that any attempt to manipulate customer data would harm the company’s reputation and drive users away.
Instead, he attributed the situation to changing data consumption patterns, pointing to background activity from mobile applications, automatic updates, and increased demand for high-quality video streaming as key factors.
He advised customers to take a more proactive approach to managing their data by monitoring app usage and adjusting settings such as video quality to control consumption.
“There’s zero incentive for MTN to steal data from you… it will just chase people away. It’s not something we do; it’s not part of our values,” he said, urging users to be more mindful of how they use their data.
