Kwadjo Asante, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of parliament for Suhum, has formally announced his intention to contest as an independent Parliamentary Candidate in the upcoming general elections, even with warnings from Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP flag bearer against it.
Asante, well-known as Oboafo, disclosed this on Sunday while adre4ssing a large gathering of supporters after a walk in Suhum.

“So, if you have all these people as a campaign team, what is fear? I see myself winning, I see Suhum winning, and I see the development of Suhum going higher,”
This decision follows Asante’s loss in the NPP primaries for a second term to Frank Asiedu Bekoe, alias Protozoa, the Political adviser to the chief of staff, who acquired 496 votes against Asamnte’s 320.
The loss has caused a substantial dissatisfaction within the Suhum NPP, with Asante and his supporters, including some constituency executives, claiming that top party officials, specifically from the Flagg Staff House, connived to ensure his loss.

In a statement signed by the constituency Secretary, Stephen A. Odame, on August 13, the party’s constitution, with their actions described as divisive and anti-party.
Before the MP’s announcement, the Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, had downplayed rumors of Asante contesting as an independent candidate during a stakeholder’s engagement in Suhum with Dr. Bawumia.
Dr. Acheampong, the MP for Abetifi, revealed that he had personally sponsored Asante in the past to unseat the former MP Fredrick Opare Ansah, and stated that Asante had assured Dr. Bawumia that he would not run as an independent candidate.
However, Asante’s absent during Dr.Bawumia’s visit to Suhum aroused doubts about his intentions. Kwadjo Asante first entered parliament in 2021 after winning the NPP parliamentary primary by defeating the them-MP,Fredrick Opare-Ansah , with 394 votes out of 666 vote cast .
