Vice president, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, in an address at a durbar in New Abirem laid out a new government policy that would favor the acquisition of locally produced goods and services over imports by state agencies.

This notice came as part of Bawumia’s ongoing campaign tour at Ghana’s Eastern Region ahead of the upcoming elections.
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flag bearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has declared that he will present a new policy termed” Buy Ghana First”, if elected as president.

According to him, the policy will guarantee that the furnitures, school uniforms, and other products that can be produced within the country are not bought from other countries for government businesses.
He said” we will introduce a policy called “Buy Ghana First” for the government. So if the government wants to procure something that is locally available, we must produce it here instead of importing. For instance, if we need furniture, we must buy from Ghana not that we go  to another country to bring them in”.

He explained that this policy is to create job opportunities for tailors, seamstresses and carpenters.
“This will create more jobs. So henceforth if we want school uniforms and furnitures, we won’t import from China. We will produce all in Ghana so that our tailors and carpenters will get more work to do. You only go outside when the product is not available in Ghana.

The buy Ghana First policy will boost production and save foreign exchange. It will help businesses”.
The Ghana Statistical Service, from its recent data disclosed that the country’s import bill for the first quarter of 2024 increased by $100 million compared to the same period in 2023 reaching $3.9 billion.

The “Buy Ghana First Policy” is expected to lessen the country’s import bill, boost local production and support the governments attempt to reinforce the economy.
