Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang Becomes Ghana’s First Female Vice President-Elect

Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has made history as Ghana’s first female Vice President, following a declaration by the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Mrs. Jean Adukwei Mensha making John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) a winner in the 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary Elections.

Professor Opoku-Agyemang served as Mahama’s running mate in the December 7, 2024, elections, marking her second stint on a presidential ticket after partnering with him in the 2020 general election.

Her selection earlier this year was unanimously endorsed by the NDC’s National Executive Committee, affirming her status as a trailblazer in Ghanaian politics.

A respected academic and former Minister for Education, Professor Opoku-Agyemang’s elevation to the vice presidency signals a significant milestone in the country’s political landscape, inspiring a new generation of female leadership in governance.

Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, born November 22, 1951, is a Ghanaian academic and politician who served as Minister for Education from February 2013 to January 2017. She is a full professor of literature.

She served as the first female Vice-Chancellor of a state university in Ghana when she took over as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast. She currently serves as the Chancellor of the Women’s University in Africa.
