Dr. Rashid Pelpuo Discusses Wa Central’s Challenges and His Personal Journey on Adekye Mu Nsem
On Monday, 22nd July 2024, Adekye Mu Nsem, hosted by Ama Papabi, featured Hon. Dr. Rashid Abdul Hasan Pelpuo, the MP for Wa Central, to discuss Ghana’s recent economy. Ama Papabi began by inquiring about his well-being and the situation in Wa Central before addressing the issue of serial killings in Wa. Dr. Pelpuo mentioned that authorities are diligently working to apprehend the culprits, although no concrete evidence has been found yet. He revealed that an individual is being pursued to explain his actions, with a bounty of 100,000 Ghana cedis placed on the suspect.
Dr. Pelpuo then shared his personal background, starting from primary school, which he completed at Form Four. He worked as a messenger at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for a year and a half, focusing on environmental concerns under district manager Mr. Kyerena ECK. At age sixteen, he worked as a maid for Dr. Hougan and later passed exams to enter secondary school, attending Wa Secondary School from 1978 to 1983, despite two of his papers being canceled.
He became a pupil teacher in communities around Wa, earning recognition as the best teacher, which motivated him to further his education. After passing Level 6 in secondary school, he continued to university. In university, Dr. Pelpuo contended for the president, won, and later became the secretary of the Maxim Club. He served as vice president for Professor Attah Bregyum and became president after the professor left. He lost the SRC election due to suspicions of his affiliation with the NDC Party but was encouraged by Wahid and Nana Aborah to establish the students’ wing at 10 AM. He organized the wing, which is now the Tertiary Institution Network (TEN), becoming its first president.
Dr. Pelpuo had been a member of the PNDC before university, which facilitated his political journey. The PNDC, not being a democratic organization without a parliament, enabled him to serve as the regional boss, organizing youth towards self-help projects, including building schools, hospitals, and roads.
